Puutaiao Lead

The role of the Puutaiao Lead is to Whakatipungia Ngaa Rauru Kiitahitanga by leading the puutaiao team to achieve excellence in environmental outcomes across the Ngaa Rauru rohe and influence policy, attitudes and practices within mainstream organisations and agencies, beyond our borders. The role has a particular focus on developing kaitiakitanga, resource management, environmental policy and planning as well as the design and implementation of environmental projects and initiatives.
You will be required to develop the capacity of the team, establishing planning and resource management systems and frameworks which enable Te Kaahui o Rauru (TKOR) to engage and advise on all consents, policy and relevant central and regional government planning processes. In these processes representing hapuu interests, which informs the iwi position, is paramount. This will be achieved by offering information sessions and waananga where appropriate, gathering feedback from appropriate hapuu members, formulating recommendations, conducting Cultural Impact Assessments if required and providing timely input to councils and applicants.
The role also oversees relationship management with all key treaty partners as well as neighbouring iwi, on puutaiao matters. Through these relationships regional responses to wider processes and initiatives will be developed. The role will be responsible for improving environmental outcomes on ground and regionally through local and broadscale engagement in conservation and land use management, demonstrating Ngaa Rauru’s commitment to kaitiaki and manaakitanga.
You will also need to engage with technical experts to gain an understanding of current best practice techniques and management frameworks for te taiao as it relates to the Ngaa Rauru rohe. This will include external advisors as well as our own in-house team.
This position will require discretion, diplomacy, strategic planning skills and sound judgement. The Puutaiao Lead is an integral part of the Senior Leadership team.
You will have a tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline – planning, science, policy, environment, law or similar. 5+ years proven work experience in a similar role with a track record of working strategically, tactically, collaboratively and independently with political and cultural acumen and sensitivity. You will be a confident communicator who is capable of articulating and presenting complex information to a wide range of stakeholders, staff and management.
The ideal applicant will possess:
- An understanding of environmental policy, planning and legislative frameworks
- Research, policy development, analysis and evaluation skills
- Competent in Microsoft Office, particularly excel.
- Ideally experience with ArcGIS
- Experience prioritising and managing workflows
- Understanding of Te Ao Maori and understanding of Ngaa Raurutanga and commitment to its revitalisation
- A good understanding of the challenges faced in realising long term sustainable outcomes in the landscape
- Ability to influence change within the rural community and agri-industry sectors
