Rangatahi Step Boldly Into The Future At Tech Expo 2026
30 May 2026
More than 220 rangatahi from across the wider Ngaa Rauru and Whanganui rohe came together in central Whanganui on Friday 22 May for the Rangatahi Tech Expo 2026, an inspiring day dedicated to creativity, innovation, and future possibilities. Proudly sponsored by Te Kaahui o Rauru in association with the Whanganui Tech Network, the expo created a vibrant space where rangatahi could explore emerging technologies while remaining grounded in maatauranga Maaori and community connection.
Throughout the day, rangatahi were immersed in a wide range of hands-on experiences facilitated by local pakihi Maaori and community innovators. From virtual reality journeys and Puanga stellarium exploration to AI-generated imagery, ProCreate design, digital media, podcasting, and live reo irirangi captures, each session offered an opportunity to learn by doing. The diversity of activities highlighted not only the breadth of technology available today but also the many ways it can be shaped through creative and cultural lenses.
Beyond the practical workshops, the expo also opened up important conversations about pathways into the tech sector. Rangatahi explored topics such as statistical data analysis, digital interpretation using archival content, and innovative ways of bringing taonga to digital life. A particular highlight was the opportunity for rangatahi to share their own perspectives using the Te Whare Tapa Whaa model, reinforcing the importance of wellbeing, identity, and voice within future-focused spaces.
The energy throughout the day was both uplifting and inspiring. Rangatahi engaged confidently with facilitators, asked thoughtful paatai, and began to see new possibilities for themselves within the technology and innovation landscape. For many, it was an opportunity to imagine futures where they can thrive while staying connected to their culture, their people, and their whenua.
He Kaakano facilitator Ngaareta Patea reflected on the success of the event, describing it as an incredible day that showcased the potential of rangatahi when given space to explore, create, and connect.
